How to Play Pudge
Playing Pudge well comes down to a handful of habits, from the lane to the last fight. This page walks through them phase by phase; each section gives the checklist of a detailed, fact-checked guide, so you can read the short version here and the reasons there.

Pudge's abilities
Values per level, damage types and what goes through spell immunity are on the abilities page, from game data:
How to lane as Pudge
The first minutes: positioning in lane and getting hooks past the creep wave.
ADVICE
- Stand in fog or behind creeps so the enemy cannot see you.
- Throw hooks only at enemies who have stepped away from their wave.
- Turn Rot off the moment your target leaves its area.
- Save Meat Shield for real danger, not minor harass.
ADVICE
- Help at the bounty runes, but walk away if the enemy has more heroes.
- Choose your first skill based on your lane, not habit.
- Keep enough mana for at least one hook at all times.
- Press Stop to cancel a hook you no longer want to throw.
ADVICE
- Before throwing, trace the line to your target and check for creeps on it.
- Move to the side of the lane for diagonal angles past the wave.
- Wait for the enemy to step forward for a last hit or to harass.
- Look for gaps late in a wave clash when few creeps remain.
How to land hooks
The short version of hook aiming; the hook guide covers angles, fog and practice in full.
ADVICE
- Watch the target for a moment and decide what they want to do next.
- Aim at their next step, and lead them more the farther away they are.
- Throw right after an ally disables or slows the target.
- Look for hooks when the enemy stops to attack, cast or channel.
When to rotate and gank
Leaving lane at the right time and ganking with your team.
ADVICE
- Leave lane only with your ultimate, enough mana and decent health.
- Tell your lane partner before you go.
- Pick a lane where an enemy is pushed up and has no escape ready.
- Walk through fog and trees to stay unseen.
ADVICE
- Smoke only with a clear target and your key spells ready.
- Let one player lead the group so it stays together.
- Walk at the front and slightly to the side to keep hook paths clear.
- Agree on who starts the fight before the smoke ends.
Vision and wards
Seeing enemies before they see you, and spotting enemy vision.
ADVICE
- Ward the paths enemies use, not just open ground.
- Stand in fog near your ward, where the enemy cannot see you.
- Use trees and high ground to stay hidden while you wait.
- Throw blind hooks only when you have a strong reason to.
Teamfights
Choosing targets in fights and using Dismember well.
ADVICE
- Wait on the flank, in the fog, before the fight starts.
- Hook the enemy your team can kill quickly or who is most dangerous.
- Check which enemies can interrupt Dismember before you cast it.
- Turn Rot off when it is not hitting anyone useful.
ADVICE
- Land a hook first, then cast Dismember before the target can react.
- Turn on Rot during the channel when the target is beside you.
- Check which nearby enemies can stun or silence you before you cast.
- Avoid targets the enemy can free with a strong dispel.
Rot, Meat Shield and mana
Using the rest of the kit and keeping mana for the plays that matter.
ADVICE
- Turn Rot on right after a hook lands.
- Turn it off as soon as no enemy is in range.
- Check your health bar every time you consider Rot.
- Do not run Rot against spell-immune enemies.
ADVICE
- Cast Meat Shield just before burst damage, not after.
- Do not cast it when nothing is threatening you.
- Pair it with Rot when you dive into enemies.
- Cast it before or during Dismember if you expect focus; it does not break the channel.
ADVICE
- Keep mana for at least one hook and one Dismember before ganking.
- Throw hooks only when the target is likely to walk into the path.
- Cancel a bad hook with Stop before the cast finishes.
- Drink Clarity only where enemy heroes cannot attack you.
Items
What players buy is data, not advice: see the build and items pages for current numbers.
ADVICE
- Pick the item direction from your role first, then adjust to the enemy draft.
- As a core, plan for Blink Dagger or Black King Bar based on how you start fights.
- As an offlaner, choose Blade Mail, Pipe or Crimson Guard by what the enemy deals.
- As position four, save for mobility and saves while carrying Smoke and wards.
ADVICE
- Use Meat Hook freely on spell-immune enemies; it still pulls them.
- Use Dismember on a spell-immune target only when your team can follow up.
- Turn off Rot when the only enemy near you has BKB active.
- Stand where Rot hits enemies who are not spell immune.
Pudge by position
What changes when Pudge plays support, mid or offlane.
ADVICE
- Leave last hits to your carry and take only what they cannot reach.
- Place Observer Wards on enemy paths into your lane.
- Throw Meat Hook only when your carry can follow up.
- Keep a hook ready to pull your carry out of danger.
ADVICE
- Stand between your carry and the enemy offlaner, ideally out of sight.
- Pull a neutral camp to move the lane back toward your tower.
- Tell your carry before every pull or rotation.
- Hook the offlaner only when your carry can join the fight.
ADVICE
- Prioritize last hits and denies before looking for hooks.
- Throw Meat Hook only through a clear path, not into the creep wave.
- Toggle Rot off when no enemy is near.
- Push your wave before you leave to gank.
ADVICE
- Treat the lane as a fight over the enemy carry's farm.
- Stand back at the edge of experience range when you are outnumbered.
- Save Meat Shield for the moment both enemies commit.
- Hook the carry only when they step away from their tower and wave.
Common mistakes
Habits worth fixing, and how to fix them.
ADVICE
- Plan the follow-up before you throw Meat Hook.
- Check the minimap for missing enemies before you pull someone in.
- Hide in fog or trees and step out only to throw.
- Turn Rot off after a fight and against spell-immune enemies.
