Pudge Rotation Timing
Updated: (today) · 4 min read · Facts checked Oct 4, 2026 on patch 7.41
Good Pudge rotation timing means leaving lane with your ultimate and enough mana for a full combo. You also want a target lane where an enemy is pushed up without vision. If any of those is missing, the walk usually costs more than it gains. Rotate with a plan, not just because your lane feels quiet.
ADVICE
What should you have before you leave lane?
Start with your own resources. A gank needs at least one hook attempt and, ideally, your ultimate.
Dismember is a channeled ultimate that turns a landed hook into a real kill threat. Without it, you rely on your allies for almost all the damage.
Mana matters just as much. Walking across the map and arriving with too little mana for
Meat Hook wastes the whole trip. Check the current mana costs on Pudge abilities and make sure you can afford what you plan to cast. If mana is often your problem, read how to manage mana on Pudge.
Health is the last check. If you are low, you may die to the first enemy who turns on you. Consider topping up before you go.
How do you pick which lane to gank?
Look at the minimap before you move. The best targets are usually enemies who have pushed far toward your side. They have a long walk back to safety, and that gives you more time to catch them.
Other good signs include:
- An enemy hero with no escape spell, or one who just used it.
- A lane where your ally already has a disable ready.
- A part of the map with no enemy wards that you know of.
- An enemy who is low on health after a long trade.
Avoid lanes where the enemy stands next to their own tower. Even a landed hook may not be enough to finish them there.
When does leaving lane hurt your team?
Every rotation has a cost. While you are gone, your lane partner is alone. If they face two enemies, they may lose farm, health, or even their life. Tell your team before you leave, so your partner can play safer.
You also lose the experience and gold you would have gained in lane. A failed rotation is the worst case: you lose time, and the enemy learns you are not in your lane. A common approach is to rotate only when the chance of success feels high, and to stay when it does not.
If your partner is a fragile core, leaving early can cost the game more than one kill gains. Read the state of your own lane before you walk away.
How do you move so the enemy does not see you coming?
Use the fog of war. Walk through trees and along paths that enemy wards are less likely to cover. A rotation that is spotted early rarely works, because the enemy simply backs off.
Before you leave, consider making a small show of staying. Stay visible at your lane for a moment, then move out of sight. Enemies who saw you a moment ago may think you are still there.
Rune spots can be useful stops on the way. Passing by one lets you check it while you move. Do not wait at a rune spot for long, though, as standing still wastes the time you need for the gank. For a deeper look at how vision affects your hooks, see using vision and wards for Pudge hooks.
Should you use a Town Portal Scroll to rotate?
A Town Portal Scroll teleports you to an allied building. It can bring you to a far lane quickly, especially when an ally is already fighting there. It also shows the enemy where you are going, because the teleport is visible.
Consider walking when surprise matters most. Consider teleporting when a fight has already started and speed matters more than surprise. Keep a scroll in your inventory either way, so you can join a fight or save a tower.
What should you do if the gank fails?
Do not chase forever. If the enemy escapes, look for a nearby objective instead. You might take a ward, push a wave, or join another lane that is close by.
If the enemy now knows where you are, assume they will play safer. Wait before trying the same lane again. Head back to your own lane if your partner needs you, or move on to a different target.
