Pudge Fog Hooks

Pudge fog hooks work because enemies cannot dodge what they cannot see. Stand where the enemy has no vision of you, such as in trees or on unwarded high ground, and throw Meat Hook at a spot on their path. The enemy only notices the hook once it is already coming.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

Why are hooks from fog so effective?

Fog of war hides units that no enemy unit or ward can see. When you stand in fog, the enemy does not know where you are. They have no reason to juke, so they walk in straight, predictable lines.

A visible Pudge changes how enemies play. They keep creeps between you and them and stay alert. A hidden Pudge gets none of that caution. The hook has the same flight time either way, but a target who is not expecting it reacts much later.

Can you hook a target you cannot see?

Yes. Meat Hook is a point-target ability, so you aim it at a location, not at a unit. You can throw it into an area where you have no vision at all. If a unit is on the line when the hook passes, it gets pulled.

These are often called blind hooks. They depend on knowing where an enemy will be without seeing them. Good blind hooks use information you already have:

  • An enemy who just walked into fog on a clear path is probably still on that path.
  • Heroes often walk the same route to their jungle camps or to a rune.
  • The minimap may show a hero for a moment before they vanish again.
  • A teammate's ping can tell you where an enemy is heading.

Blind hooks miss more often than hooks at visible targets. Use them when the enemy's path is easy to guess, not as random throws into the dark.

Where should you stand to stay in fog?

Trees are the most common hiding place. They block vision, so a Pudge behind a line of trees is hard to see from the lane. The trees next to each lane give you cover close to where enemies walk.

High ground also helps. Units on low ground cannot see up onto high ground without help, such as a ward or a flying unit. Standing on high ground next to a ramp lets you watch enemies below while they cannot see you.

Before you hide, ask whether the enemy has vision there. An Observer Ward gives them sight of the area, and then your hiding spot is useless. If an enemy suddenly changes path or backs off, assume you have been seen and move. The Pudge wards and vision guide covers how to spot and handle enemy vision.

How do you get into fog without being seen?

Walking straight from the lane into the trees can give away your position. Enemies who watch you disappear know roughly where you went. Try to leave their sight in ways that do not point to your real target.

A common approach is to walk away as if heading back to base or to another lane. Once out of sight, circle back through the trees. Enemies who think you left will relax.

Smoke of Deceit hides you and your group from the enemy until you get close to them. This makes it easier to reach a hiding spot near a lane without being spotted on the way. The smoke gank guide explains how to plan these moves with your team.

When should you throw from fog?

Patience matters more than anything else. Once you throw, the enemy knows where you are. A missed hook from fog reveals your spot and wastes your surprise.

Wait until the target is close enough and walking a predictable line. Good moments include a hero walking to a last hit, a support heading to pull a camp, or a hero returning to lane from base. If the target stops or turns often, wait longer.

Also think about what happens after the hook lands. Pulling an enemy into your hiding spot is only useful if you can finish the kill or your team can help. Check the current values on the Pudge abilities page so you know what damage and range to expect at each level.

What gives away a hidden Pudge?

Several things can reveal you before you are ready. Standing in the open edge of the trees, rather than deeper inside, may leave you visible. Attacking creeps or using other spells shows your position.

Enemy wards and units that fly or see over terrain can also catch you. If the enemy plays as if they know where you are, they probably do. Move to a new spot rather than waiting for a hook that will never come.

Checklist

  • Hide in trees or on high ground where the enemy has no vision.
  • Leave enemy sight in a way that does not reveal your real target.
  • Consider Smoke of Deceit to reach a hiding spot unseen.
  • Throw blind hooks only when the enemy's path is easy to guess.
  • Wait for a predictable target before revealing yourself.
  • Move to a new spot if enemies start avoiding your area.
