Pudge Hook Guide

To land Pudge hooks, aim at where the enemy will be when the hook arrives, choose an angle with no unit in the way, and throw when the target cannot see you or cannot dodge. The sections below cover each part with a checklist from our detailed hook guides.

How Meat Hook works

Meat Hook pulls the first unit on its line, creeps and allies included. It is aimed at a point, so it can be thrown into fog, and trees and cliffs do not stop it (checked for our prediction and fog guides).

Aim where the enemy will be

Reading movement and leading the target.

ADVICE

  • Watch the target for a moment and decide what they want to do next.
  • Aim at their next step, and lead them more the farther away they are.
  • Throw right after an ally disables or slows the target.
  • Look for hooks when the enemy stops to attack, cast or channel.
  • Prefer spots where trees, ramps or the river limit the enemy's path.
  • Note which way each enemy jukes and aim there on the next try.

Hooking past the creep wave

Lane hooks: angles around creeps and the moments heroes step clear.

ADVICE

  • Before throwing, trace the line to your target and check for creeps on it.
  • Move to the side of the lane for diagonal angles past the wave.
  • Wait for the enemy to step forward for a last hit or to harass.
  • Look for gaps late in a wave clash when few creeps remain.
  • Coordinate with your lane partner on where the wave should sit.
  • Save the hook for heroes instead of creeps.

Hooks from fog of war

Hiding, blind hooks and what gives a hidden Pudge away.

ADVICE

  • Hide in trees or on high ground where the enemy has no vision.
  • Leave enemy sight in a way that does not reveal your real target.
  • Consider Smoke of Deceit to reach a hiding spot unseen.
  • Throw blind hooks only when the enemy's path is easy to guess.
  • Wait for a predictable target before revealing yourself.
  • Move to a new spot if enemies start avoiding your area.

Saving allies with the hook

When pulling a teammate is worth more than hooking an enemy.

ADVICE

  • Make sure your position is safer than your ally's before you hook them.
  • Check that no other unit stands in front of the ally on the line.
  • Keep the hook ready for teammates who play far from the group.
  • Ping or tell your team when your hook is available for saves.
  • Avoid pulling allies who are about to escape or cast on their own.
  • Weigh the save against using the hook on an enemy instead.

Fake hooks

Canceling the cast to bait a dodge.

ADVICE

  • Practice canceling the cast with Stop in a lobby until it feels natural.
  • Fake only against enemies who already react to your hook.
  • Watch which way the enemy dodges and aim the real hook there.
  • Throw the real hook quickly, while the enemy is still reacting.
  • Mix fakes and real hooks so your pattern stays unclear.
  • Use visible pressure to protect your lane partner, then disappear.

How to practice

Drills in the client and replay review.

ADVICE

  • Open Demo Hero mode and throw hooks at standing targets from different distances.
  • Check the current hook range on the abilities page before you drill range.
  • Practice throwing right after a direction change to learn the turn delay.
  • Use a private lobby or bot game to hook targets that walk on their own.
  • Review one replay per week and sort your misses into aim, timing or choice.
  • Give every session one goal and keep it short.

Full guide: How to Practice Pudge Hooks

ADVICE

  • Set only the Meat Hook slot to quick cast at first.
  • Keep Quickcast On Key Down off so the hook fires on release.
  • Turn on a range display for quick cast if your client offers one.
  • Rest the cursor on the target line before you press the key.
  • Retime your fake hooks for the key-release rhythm.
  • Test the setup in Demo Hero mode before a ranked game.

What the hook interacts with

Units, spell immunity, blocks and map portals.

ADVICE

  • Treat trees, cliffs, wards and couriers as see-through for the hook; only units stop it.
  • Check the line for creeps, allies and heroes before you throw.
  • Hook spell-immune targets for the pull, but expect them to act while dragged.
  • Use the hook to break channels, teleports and Twin Gate warps.
  • Cancel with Stop during the cast to fake a throw at no cost.
  • Find current range, speed and damage on the abilities page, not in old guides.
