The most useful Pudge laning tips come down to three things. Stay out of sight, keep your mana for real hook chances, and take last hits when nothing else is happening. A good lane is not about landing many hooks. It is about forcing the enemy to respect the threat while you stay healthy and gain experience.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

Where should Pudge stand in lane?

Try to stand where the enemy cannot see you. The fog of war hides units, so a Pudge in the trees or behind the creep line is far scarier than one standing in the open. When enemies cannot see you, they have to guess where a hook might come from.

Avoid standing in front of your creeps for long. If you attack an enemy hero near their creeps, those creeps usually switch to you. That trade often costs you more health than it costs them.

A common approach is to move between a few hidden spots. If you stay in one place, the enemy learns it and simply walks around it.

When should you throw Meat Hook in lane?

Meat Hook flies in a straight line and drags the first unit it hits back to you. In lane, that means creeps are your biggest obstacle. Look for moments when the enemy steps away from their wave. They may reach for a last hit at the edge or walk back toward their tower.

Do not throw hooks just because the cooldown is ready. Each miss costs mana, and an empty mana pool turns you into a target. Consider holding the hook until the enemy commits to a clear path. For more on reading movement, see how to predict where enemies will walk.

A hook that pulls an enemy close to your own tower is often worth more than one that lands in the middle of the lane. They have further to walk to escape. Your tower turns on them if they attack you or your partner, but spells alone do not draw its attention, so do not count on tower damage.

How should Pudge use Rot during the laning phase?

Rot is toggled on and off. It hurts nearby enemies and slows them, but it also damages you. In lane, that self-damage adds up fast. Turn it on when you have a target close to you, and turn it off as soon as they leave its area.

After a successful hook, Rot helps keep the enemy close while your partner adds damage. Without a follow-up from an ally, a long Rot chase can leave you weaker than your target. Read when to turn Rot on and off for more detail.

How do you survive a hard lane as Pudge?

Some lanes are simply hard. Ranged heroes can hit you from a safe distance, and heroes with strong harass can push you out of experience range. If you are losing trades, stop trading. Stand back, collect experience, and wait for a real opening.

Meat Shield is a defensive self-cast that cannot be dispelled. Consider saving it for the moment an enemy commits to you, rather than using it on minor harass. Check the current values on Pudge abilities before deciding how much it can help in your lane.

If you want to know which heroes tend to make the lane difficult, look at heroes with a clear edge over Pudge. Knowing a matchup is hard helps you play safer from the start.

How do you help your lane partner?

Pudge is often paired with a core who needs space to farm. Your threat alone can keep enemies away from your partner. Even if you never land a hook, an enemy who keeps checking the trees is not harassing your core.

Talk with your partner about who takes last hits. If your core needs the gold more, focus on denying and zoning instead. Hooking an ally pulls them to you, which can save a partner who has walked too far forward.

Pay attention to your partner's health and position. If they are low and an enemy dives, a quick hook on the enemy can turn the fight. A hook on your own partner can also pull them out of danger.

When is the laning phase over for Pudge?

The lane changes once you have your ultimate. Dismember is a channeled ultimate that adds a lot of kill threat to every hook. That is a good moment to look at other lanes as well as your own.

If your lane is calm and you have mana and your ultimate, consider leaving to gank. If your lane is dangerous, stay and protect your partner a little longer.

Checklist

  • Stand in fog or behind creeps so the enemy cannot see you.
  • Throw hooks only at enemies who have stepped away from their wave.
  • Turn Rot off the moment your target leaves its area.
  • Save Meat Shield for real danger, not minor harass.
  • Stop trading if you are losing health faster than the enemy.
  • Look at other lanes once you have your ultimate and enough mana.
