Pudge Rot Tips: When to Turn It On and Off
Updated: (today) · 3 min read · Facts checked Oct 4, 2026 on patch 7.41
The rule for when to use Pudge
Rot is simple: turn it on when enemies are close enough to feel it. Turn it off as soon as no enemy is in reach, because it keeps hurting Pudge for as long as it runs. Many players flick it on and off many times in a fight instead of leaving it running.
ADVICE
What does Rot actually do?
Rot is a toggle. While it is on, it deals Magical damage to nearby enemies and slows them. It also damages Pudge himself the whole time it is active.
Because the damage is Magical, Rot does not pierce spell immunity. An enemy under Black King Bar will not take Rot damage or the slow. The BKB guide explains which Pudge abilities still work on spell-immune targets.

When should you turn Rot on?
The clearest moment is right after a successful
Meat Hook. The target lands next to you, so Rot starts working at once. The slow makes it harder for them to walk away while your team arrives.
Turn it on when you are chasing a slower enemy. If you are already close, the slow can keep you in range. If they are pulling away, Rot will not help and only costs you health.
Turn it on when an enemy walks into you on purpose. A melee hero who attacks you is already in range. Rot punishes them for staying.
Consider it during a
Dismember channel. You are standing next to the target anyway, so Rot adds damage and slows any enemy who runs in to save them.
When should you turn Rot off?
Turn it off the moment nobody is in range. Every second it runs on empty ground costs you health for nothing.
Turn it off when your health gets low. Rot cannot kill Pudge by itself, but it can leave you so low that any enemy hit finishes you. A common habit is to check your health bar every time you think about Rot.
Turn it off when the enemy is spell immune. Since it does not affect them, the self-damage is pure loss.
Turn it off before you move into fog to set up a hook. Enemies near you will feel the damage and the slow, which tells them exactly where you are.
Should you use Rot to farm or push?
Rot can clear creeps, but it trades your health for that. In lane, most players keep it for heroes rather than creep waves. Pushing the wave by accident can move the fight under the enemy tower, which usually makes ganks riskier.
Later in the game, some players use Rot to help clear a wave when they have plenty of health. This is a judgment call. If a fight could start soon, keep your health instead.
How do you manage Rot in a teamfight?
In a fight, think of Rot as a short burst, not a constant aura. Turn it on when you are among enemies. Turn it off when you step out to reposition.
Pay attention to who your Rot is slowing. Slowing a carry trying to reach your backline is very useful. Slowing a support who is already running away matters less.
Watch for enemy BKBs. When a key enemy goes spell immune, your Rot stops working on them. Switch your focus to the heroes it still affects, or turn it off. The teamfight guide has more on where Pudge should stand.
