The core Pudge combo is simple: land Meat Hook, switch on Rot as the target arrives, then channel Dismember while your team joins in. Everything else, from Blink Dagger starts to team setups and defensive tricks, is a variation on that idea. This Pudge combo guide walks through each one, what is safe to press during the channel, and the mistakes that waste a good hook.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

What is the basic Pudge combo?

The basic Pudge combo has three parts. Each part does a different job, and the order matters.

Step one: the hook

Meat Hook flies in a straight line and grabs the first unit it touches. If that unit is an enemy hero, it is dragged back to Pudge and takes damage. While it is being pulled, the enemy is fully disabled and cannot act.

That short disable is the opening of every combo. The target cannot cast a spell or use an item on the way in. For advice on landing the hook in the first place, see the hook mechanics guide.

Step two: Rot

Rot is a toggle. While it runs, it deals damage and slows enemies near Pudge. It also hurts Pudge for as long as it is on.

Switch it on as the hooked enemy lands next to you, not long before. Running it early burns your own health for nothing. Running it as they arrive means the slow and damage start the moment they can move again.

Step three: Dismember

Dismember is a channeled ultimate with a short cast range. Pudge chews on one enemy, holds it in place and deals damage over time. The damage grows with Pudge's Strength, and it heals him for the total amount.

Cast it as soon as the hooked target lands. The hook disable ends when the pull ends, so a quick Dismember leaves the enemy almost no window to react. The current range and duration are on Pudge abilities.

Why this order works

The hook takes away the target's control on the way in. Dismember takes it away again once they land. Rot adds damage and slows anyone who tries to help. Together they keep one enemy locked for a long time, which is often enough for your team to finish the kill.

Can Pudge use other abilities while channeling Dismember?

Some, but not all. This is the most important rule in Pudge combos, so it is worth learning well.

Rot is safe during the channel

Turning Rot on or off does not break Dismember. You can start the channel and then toggle Rot without losing the hold. If Rot is already on when you start Dismember, it keeps running.

This lets you react during the channel. If your health gets low, you can switch Rot off and keep holding the target. If an enemy walks in to save their friend, you can switch it back on to slow them.

Meat Shield is safe during the channel

Meat Shield is an instant cast with no target. Pressing it does not break the Dismember channel. That makes it the natural answer when enemies turn on you mid-channel.

The shield blocks part of the damage you take, so you can keep the hold going a little longer. The Meat Shield guide covers its timing in more detail.

Most other orders end the channel

A move command ends Dismember at once. So does a stray right click on the ground or on another unit. Treat the channel as a time to keep your hands still unless you mean to press Rot or Meat Shield.

Enemy disables also end it. A stun, silence, hex or cyclone on Pudge stops the channel. Before you start, look at which enemies nearby can do that.

The full combo with everything

Put together, the full combo looks like this:

  • Throw Meat Hook at the target.
  • Switch Rot on as the target lands.
  • Cast Dismember on the target right away.
  • Press Meat Shield if enemies start to hit you.
  • Toggle Rot off if your health drops too low.

That is what most players mean by the Pudge full combo. The hook and the ultimate do the heavy lifting. Rot and Meat Shield adjust the fight while you hold.

What are the best close-range combos?

Not every kill starts with a hook. Sometimes the enemy is already next to you, or there is no clear line.

Walk up, Rot and Dismember

If an enemy is close and slow to react, you can skip the hook. Switch Rot on as you walk in, then cast Dismember once you are in range. The slow from Rot can help you close the last bit of distance.

This saves the hook for later in the fight. If the target breaks free or a second enemy appears, you still have Meat Hook ready.

Dismember first, hook second

When an enemy stands within Dismember range, consider casting it first. You lock the target down at once. When the channel ends, you still have Meat Hook to catch them if they try to run.

This order works well on heroes with escape spells. The hold stops them from using their escape, and the hook is a second answer if they slip away. The Dismember guide has more on choosing targets.

Rot plus Meat Shield in a brawl

In a messy fight with several enemies around you, many players switch on Rot and press Meat Shield together. Rot hurts and slows everyone close. The shield lets you stay among them a little longer.

This is not a kill combo by itself. It is a way to stay in the fight while you wait for a hook or Dismember target.

Which items add to Pudge combos?

Items give Pudge new ways to start a combo or new ways to escape after one. Only a few have a clear link to his spells.

Blink Dagger teleports Pudge a short distance. That gives him a combo start without a hook. You blink next to the target, switch Rot on and cast Dismember at once.

Blink is also an angle tool. You can blink to the side of a creep wave or a group of heroes, then throw a hook from a fresh line. The enemy often has less time to react to a hook from a spot they did not expect.

There is one catch. Blink Dagger cannot be used for a short time after an enemy hero damages you. If you are already being hit, the blink may not be there when you need it. The Blink Dagger guide covers this item in depth.

Aghanim's Shard

The Shard changes Meat Hook. When the hook hits an enemy, it deals bonus damage based on how far the enemy was pulled. A long hook into the full combo deals more damage than a short one.

When the hook hits an ally instead, its cooldown is cut by half. That opens a two-step combo: save an ally with the first hook, then catch an enemy with the second. The Aghanim's guide explains when the Shard fits.

Aghanim's Scepter

The Scepter upgrades Rot, making it larger and stronger. It also cuts the health restoration of enemies inside it. In a combo, that means Rot reaches more of the enemies who run in to save your Dismember target. Exact values are on the abilities page.

Force Staff

Force Staff pushes a unit a short way in the direction it is facing. Used on yourself, it can close the gap to a target before you Rot and Dismember. It can also move you to a better angle for a hook.

Force Staff is also a way out after a combo. If the fight turns, you can push yourself away from danger. Plan that exit before you start the channel.

Black King Bar

Black King Bar gives Pudge spell immunity. That blocks many of the disables that would break the Dismember channel. It does not block abilities that pierce spell immunity, so stay alert. Both Meat Hook and Dismember still work on spell-immune enemies, as the BKB guide explains.

How do Pudge team combos work?

Pudge is at his best when allies help him. Team combos turn one landed hook into a sure kill, or make a hard hook easy.

Ally disable, then hook

Stunned or rooted heroes cannot move. If an ally disables an enemy first, your hook has a still target. That is often the easiest hook you will throw all game.

Talk to your team before a gank. Agree who disables first and when you throw. Even a short disable turns a guess into a sure hit.

Hook into your team

The hook pulls the enemy to wherever Pudge stands. If you stand near your allies, the enemy lands in the middle of your team. Dismember then holds them while everyone hits.

This is the main reason Pudge often waits close to his team before a fight. A hook thrown from the front line drags the target into all your damage at once.

Dismember as a hold for your team

Dismember holds one enemy for the whole channel. That is time your allies can use. A short channel on a fragile hero, with three allies hitting it, is often a kill.

Pick a target your team can reach. A hold far from your allies gives them nothing to do. The teamfight guide has more on where to stand.

Pairing with heroes who follow up

Some heroes have spells that hit an area around Pudge or around his target. When the hooked enemy lands next to Pudge, those spells can catch them easily. The heroes that pair with Pudge guide covers which allies combine well.

What are Pudge's defensive combos?

Pudge's combos are not only for kills. The same tools can save you or a teammate.

Hook an ally out of danger

Meat Hook can grab allied heroes. If an ally is caught, a hook can pull them back toward you and away from the enemy. With the Shard, that save also gives you a faster second hook.

Make sure no enemy or creep is in the line first. The first unit hit takes the hook, friend or foe. The ally hook guide has the full details.

Dismember the diver

If an enemy dives your support or carry, Dismember on that enemy stops the dive. The diver is held in place and cannot finish their target. Your team gets a moment to turn the fight.

This is one of the most useful defensive plays Pudge has. It turns an attack on your team into a chance to kill the attacker.

Meat Shield and Rot when caught

When you get caught alone, switch Rot on and press Meat Shield. Rot slows the enemies chasing you. The shield blocks part of the damage while you walk away or wait for help.

Remember to switch Rot off once you are out of danger. It keeps hurting you otherwise.

Force Staff away

If you carry Force Staff, it can push you out of a bad spot. Turn Pudge to face the way you want to go before you use it. A push toward the enemy is a common and painful mistake.

What are the most common combo mistakes?

Most failed combos come from a few habits. Fixing them often matters more than learning new tricks.

Moving during the channel

A move command ends Dismember. Many players press it by reflex when a fight gets hectic. Keep your hands off the move key until you choose to cancel.

Rot left on too long

Rot hurts Pudge the whole time it runs. A combo that ends with Rot still on can leave you with low health for the next fight. Check your health bar and switch it off when nobody is close. The Rot guide covers the timing.

Forgetting who is spell immune

Meat Hook and Dismember both pierce spell immunity. That means the hook and the hold still work on an enemy under Black King Bar.

Rot does not pierce spell immunity. Against a spell-immune target, switch it off during the combo unless other enemies are close, since it only hurts you. Your allies with physical damage can still hit the held target.

Dismember on the wrong target

A hold on a hero your team cannot reach wastes the ultimate. So does a hold on a target the enemy can free with a strong dispel. Think about who your team can actually kill before you cast.

Ignoring nearby disables

Starting the channel next to an enemy who can stun you invites an early end. Look at who is around. Sometimes the better play is to wait for that enemy to use their stun first.

Wasting the hook on a close target

If the enemy is already in Dismember range, throwing the hook first gives you little. Keep it as a follow-up and cast Dismember first. A spare hook catches the target if they escape.

How to train these habits

Combos are about timing, and timing comes from repetition. The hook practice guide explains how to set up a practice session with targets.

Practice the full order until it feels automatic: hook, Rot as they land, Dismember right away. Then practice the habits around it. Press Meat Shield during the channel without moving. Toggle Rot off and on without breaking the hold.

Watch your own replays too. Look at the moments a combo failed. Ask whether you moved, cast too late, or picked a target that was easy to save.

Checklist

  • Hook first, switch Rot on as the target lands, then cast Dismember right away.
  • Toggle Rot and press Meat Shield freely; neither breaks the channel.
  • Keep your hands off the move key while you channel Dismember.
  • Cast Dismember first when the target is already close, and save the hook.
  • Use Blink Dagger or Force Staff to start a combo without a hook line.
  • Hook enemies into your team and hold them where allies can reach.
  • Switch Rot off against spell-immune targets and when your health is low.
