Pudge Skill Order: Hook or Rot First?

The best Pudge skill order depends on your role. Most players max Meat Hook first when they roam or play support, and many lean on Rot first when they sit in a hard lane and need to fight up close. Neither is a fixed rule, so treat this guide as advice and check what real games show on the Pudge build page.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

Should I max Hook or Rot first on Pudge?

Ask what you plan to do in the next few minutes. If you will walk around the map looking for kills, Meat Hook first is the usual pick. If you will stand in one lane and trade hits with the enemy, Rot first is a fair choice.

Each level of Meat Hook raises its damage and shortens its cooldown. That means more hooks per minute and more kill threat from range. Each level of Rot raises its damage and its slow. That makes Pudge stronger when enemies are already next to him.

So the real question is range versus close quarters. A hook that misses gives you nothing. A Rot that runs next to an enemy always does something, but only if you can get there.

Whichever you choose, most players take Dismember each time the game lets them. It is Pudge's ultimate and it turns a landed hook into a kill.

What does each extra level of Meat Hook give?

Extra levels of Meat Hook give two things: more damage on a hit and a shorter wait between tries. The mana cost stays the same, so a higher level gives more value for the same mana.

The shorter cooldown matters most for a roaming Pudge. You get more chances to land a hook during one gank. If the first one misses, the next one comes back sooner.

The damage boost matters when the hook is your main source of kill pressure. A landed hook at a high level can take a large chunk of an enemy support's health. Exact values change with patches, so see Pudge abilities for the numbers.

What does each extra level of Rot give?

Extra levels of Rot give more damage and a stronger slow. Rot costs no mana. It costs health instead, because it hurts Pudge while it is on.

That makes Rot a good partner for long lane fights. You can keep pressure on an enemy without draining your mana pool. The slow also helps you stick to a target after a hook lands.

The catch is reach. Rot only works on enemies close to you. If the enemy lane stays at range and never lets you walk up, a high level of Rot does very little. The Rot guide explains when to switch it on and off.

What is a good skill order for support Pudge?

For a support or roaming Pudge, many players put most early points into Meat Hook. A support spends a lot of time in fog and on rotations. Hook range and cooldown are what make those trips worth it.

A point in Rot early is still common. It gives you a follow-up after the hook lands, and the slow keeps the target near you. A point in Meat Shield can help if the enemy lane hits hard.

If you play position five (pos five) and stay in lane longer, you may want a little more Rot or Meat Shield. The support guide and the position five lane guide cover that lane in more depth.

What is a good skill order for offlane or mid Pudge?

In the offlane or mid, Pudge often has to survive and trade in lane. Many players lean on Rot here, because it fights melee heroes well and costs no mana. Meat Shield can also get points early when the lane is rough.

Meat Hook still matters, but you may take fewer early points in it. You throw it when you see a clear chance, not on cooldown. The offlane guide and the mid guide explain those lanes.

Some players still max Meat Hook first in the mid lane. The lane is short and the hook can punish a careless enemy. Choose based on the matchup, not habit.

How do you adjust the skill order during a game?

Watch how your plan is going. If you keep landing hooks, more points in Meat Hook pay off. If you keep missing, a point in Rot or Meat Shield may help you more in fights.

Look at the enemy lineup too. Against heroes who can stop you from walking up, hook range is worth more. Against heroes who rush into melee range, Rot does more.

Mana is another clue. If you are always out of mana, Rot points spend no mana at all. The mana guide has more ways to stretch your pool.

Where can you see a skill order from real games?

The Pudge build page shows a skill order from the site's own match sample. It only appears when the sample is large enough to be useful. If the sample is too small, the page shows nothing instead of a guess.
