Playing Pudge mid means winning a one-on-one lane with last hits, threat and good timing, then leaving to gank the side lanes. Your hook threat controls where the enemy mid can stand. The lane is only a starting point: a mid Pudge who never leaves it wastes his biggest strength.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

How do you win the solo lane?

Mid is a solo lane, so every last hit and deny is yours. Focus on clean last hits before you look for hooks. Solo experience usually lets you reach your key spells sooner than the heroes in shared lanes.

Mid is the shortest lane, and the river and trees sit right next to it. That makes it easy to move between cover and the wave. Use that space to hide your position, then step out when the enemy mid commits to a last hit.

Be honest about your matchup. Some mid heroes punish Pudge hard with ranged harass. If you are losing the lane, stay behind your creeps and take what you can safely. You can see how Pudge fares against each opponent on the Pudge matchup pages.

When should you throw Meat Hook?

Meat Hook flies in a straight line and drags the first unit it hits back to you. In mid, a creep often stands in the way. Wait for a clear path rather than throwing into the wave.

Good moments are when the enemy mid walks up to last hit, steps around the wave, or walks toward a rune. Their eyes are on the creep or the rune, not on you. Our guide on hooking around creep waves explains how to find gaps.

Do not spam the hook. Each miss costs mana and gives the enemy a free window to harass you while it is on cooldown. A miss also teaches the enemy where you like to stand.

How should you use Rot in lane?

Rot hurts and slows nearby enemies, but it also damages you. In mid, it can help you push the wave when you want to leave. It can also finish a hooked hero who tries to walk away.

Toggle it off when nobody is near. Leaving Rot on while you walk around costs you health for nothing. Check the current values on Pudge abilities to judge how much a fight with Rot will cost you.

When should a mid Pudge leave lane to gank?

The biggest reason to play Pudge mid is the freedom to roam. Once you have your ultimate, Dismember gives you a reliable way to hold one hero in place. Pair it with a hook and you have a strong kill threat in any lane.

Before you leave, push your wave so the enemy mid has to deal with it. That limits what they gain while you are gone. It also gives you more time before your tower is in danger.

Look at the side lanes before you choose a target. A lane where the enemy has pushed far, with no wards nearby, is the best place to go. Approach through the fog and trees so the enemy cannot see you coming. Our guide on rotation timing has more ways to read the map.

How do you use Dismember on a gank?

Dismember is a channeled ultimate. It deals Magical damage, pierces spell immunity and can only be removed by strong dispels. That makes it hard for the enemy to answer once it starts.

The channel stops if you get stunned or silenced. On a gank, try to catch the hero who has the disable, or wait until they have used it. If you are ganking with an ally, let them start the fight so the enemy wastes spells first.

Use Meat Shield when you expect burst damage during the gank. It is a defensive self-cast that cannot be dispelled, so it is a quick way to stay alive while you channel.

What should you buy?

Mid Pudge has more gold than a support Pudge, but items should still help you gank and survive. Mobility and durability matter more than raw damage for most games. For a phase-by-phase view of what players buy, see the Pudge item overview.

Checklist

  • Prioritize last hits and denies before looking for hooks.
  • Throw Meat Hook only through a clear path, not into the creep wave.
  • Toggle Rot off when no enemy is near.
  • Push your wave before you leave to gank.
  • Pick side lanes that are pushed out and poorly warded.
  • Cast Dismember after the enemy disables are used up.
