Pudge Build Against Magic Damage

A Pudge build against magic damage starts with one question: who takes the burst, you or your whole team? Pipe of Insight and Glimmer Cape protect allies too, Black King Bar protects only you, and Consecrated Wraps is a sturdy personal option. Eternal Shroud and Hood of Defiance are gone from the current game, so older guides that list them are out of date.

Why does magic damage hurt Pudge so much?

Pudge has a big health pool but plays close to the enemy. He walks into lanes, waits in trees and channels Dismember in the middle of fights. Nukers love targets that stand still, and a channeling Pudge is exactly that.

His own tools help only a little. Meat Shield blocks damage of any type from any source, magic included. It is a short self-cast, though, not a full answer to a team of casters. Flesh Heap adds Strength each time Pudge kills an enemy hero, which slowly adds health. Check the current block and Strength values on the abilities page.

So when the enemy draft is heavy on spells, items carry most of the load.

What should a support Pudge buy against heavy magic damage?

When you play position four (pos four) or position five, your gold is tight. Team items give the most value per coin.

Glimmer Cape. After a short delay it turns you or an ally invisible, adds a little speed and gives a barrier that soaks magic damage. The item tooltip also says it can be cast while channeling. It is a strong pick when one ally keeps getting blown up.

Pipe of Insight. Its aura gives nearby allies a bit of magic resistance. The active puts a magic damage barrier on every ally around you. In the current patch the barrier will not land again on someone who got it recently, so time it for the big spell, not the first poke.

Force Staff. It deals with no magic at all, but it pushes any unit in the direction it faces. Pushing an ally out of a spell zone is often as good as a barrier.

What are Pudge items vs magic when he plays core?

A core Pudge in the offlane or mid has more gold and spends more time in the fight. Personal defense makes sense here.

Black King Bar. It applies a basic dispel, grants magic resistance and makes you ignore the harmful effects of enemy spells for its duration. It also blocks reflected and pure damage. Consecrated Wraps. This is a new item in the current patch. It adds magic resistance, health and attributes. It also builds charges over time and turns them into a barrier against any damage type when a player hits you.

Pipe of Insight still works on a core. If you are the one standing in front, the barrier on yourself and the aura help the whole group.

Lotus Orb. Its active sends most targeted spells back at the caster. The target still takes the spell, so it trades damage rather than stopping it.

Is Black King Bar or Pipe better for Pudge?

They solve different problems. Black King Bar stops disables on you, which protects a Dismember channel. Pipe only reduces damage, but it does so for the whole team.

A simple rule works for most games. If the enemy kills you with stuns and silences, think Black King Bar. If they kill your team with area nukes, think Pipe. If one enemy hero focuses one ally, think Glimmer Cape.

Are Hood of Defiance and Eternal Shroud still in the game?

No. Hood of Defiance was removed a long time ago. Eternal Shroud was removed in the big update that also took Facets out of the game. If a build site still suggests them, it is showing old data.

The small parts changed too. Glimmer Cape, Pipe of Insight and Consecrated Wraps all use the new Shawl in their recipes. Check the current recipes in the shop before you plan your gold.

Which cheap items help early against magic?

A plain Cloak or the new Shawl adds a bit of magic resistance. Both stack with other sources. They are fine if you need to survive a lane against a caster and plan to finish a bigger item later.

Mage Slayer is another angle for a core who hits often. Each attack puts a debuff on the enemy that cuts their spell damage for a short time. It fits best when you already stay on one caster for long fights.
