Blade Mail on Pudge can be a good buy for an offlane Pudge who stands in front and soaks damage. It gives armor and attack damage, and its active sends damage back to whoever hits you. It works best against heroes that must attack you to win, and poorly against enemies who can ignore you or turn spell immune.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

How does Blade Mail work?

The item has two parts. The passive returns a small part of each attack back to the attacker, plus a flat amount. The active is the main reason to buy it: for a few seconds it returns all incoming damage to its source.

A few rules from the item tooltip matter for Pudge:

  • The return is calculated before reductions, so your armor and magic resistance do not shrink what you send back.
  • Returned damage keeps its type, so a magic spell comes back as magic damage.
  • Returned damage gives no lifesteal and cannot be returned again.

In the current patch Blade Mail builds from the new Splintmail and gives slightly more armor than it did before. Check the exact numbers and price in the shop, since they move between patches.

Is Blade Mail good on offlane Pudge in the current patch?

It can be. An offlane Pudge often walks into the enemy team first and draws their attention. If the enemy cores dump their damage into you anyway, the active turns that damage against them.

It also pairs with Pudge's natural toughness. He is a Strength hero with a big health pool, so he can survive long enough for the return to matter. Meat Shield helps him stay alive during the active window. Check its current block value on the abilities page.

Whether it is the right item depends on the enemy. See the next sections for when it shines and when it does not. The offlane tips cover the rest of the role.

Does Blade Mail return Rot's self-damage?

No. Rot damages Pudge himself while it is on, but that is self-inflicted damage. Blade Mail only returns damage that enemies deal to you, so Rot's cost to your own health is not sent anywhere.

That means Rot and Blade Mail do not combine into a hidden damage trick. They still work well side by side. Rot slows enemies near you, which keeps them in range while they hit you, and the active punishes them for each hit.

What happens when an enemy has Blade Mail against Pudge?

The active returns all incoming damage, and the tooltip makes no exception for spells. So if an enemy activates Blade Mail, your Rot and Dismember damage on them comes back to you while the active lasts.

The simple answer is patience. Turn Rot off near an active Blade Mail and wait a few seconds before you start a Dismember on that hero. A hooked enemy with Blade Mail can also be left for your team while you pick another target. The Rot tips cover when to toggle it.

When is Blade Mail a poor choice?

Blade Mail needs enemies who hit you. Several situations break that.

Black King Bar grants immunity to reflected damage. An enemy carry with it active takes nothing back from your Blade Mail.

Some heroes deal their damage from range and pick off your allies instead. If nobody attacks you, the active does nothing.

Some fights are decided by disables. If you are stunned, you cannot press the active at the right moment. In those games, Black King Bar or a team item may serve you better. The guide on items against magic compares those options.

How should you use the active in a fight?

Press it when the enemy commits, not before. Turn it on when their carry starts attacking you or a nuker begins a combo. Using it too early just warns them to stop.

Pair it with a hook. Pulling a damage dealer into you and then turning on Blade Mail forces a bad choice on them. They can keep hitting you and take the damage back, or stop attacking for the duration.

Watch the enemy for spell immunity. If a Black King Bar goes up, save the active for another target.

Checklist

  • Buy Blade Mail when enemy cores must attack you to win fights.
  • Skip it when their main damage dealer has spell immunity ready.
  • Turn on the active after the enemy commits, not before.
  • Do not expect Rot's self-damage to be returned.
  • Turn Rot off when an enemy activates their own Blade Mail.
  • Compare it with the current build page to see what players actually buy.
