There is no single best first item for Pudge mid. The right pick depends on the lane: Bottle suits a mid who wants to control runes and roam, Magic Stick suits a lane against a spell-heavy enemy, and a Bracer or boots suit a Pudge who needs to survive harass. Choose the one that fixes the biggest problem of that game.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

What do players actually buy first on Pudge?

We do not guess this. The Pudge items page shows what players buy in each phase of the game, based on real match data. Look at the early columns to see which small items are common right now.

Use that page as a starting point, not a rule. Popular choices tell you what many players like. They do not tell you what your lane needs today.

Is Bottle a good first item for Pudge mid?

Bottle is a classic mid item, and it fits a roaming Pudge well. Its active spends a charge to restore some health and mana over a short time. An attack from an enemy hero breaks that effect, so use it when you are safe.

The Bottle refills when you visit the fountain. It can also store a rune for later. Storing a rune refills the Bottle's charges, so rune control and sustain go together.

For Pudge, this matters on ganks. You can hold a rune, walk to a side lane and use it at the right moment. Our guide on mid Pudge play explains when to leave lane.

The downside is cost. Bottle is pricier than the tiny items, so it delays everything else. If you are losing the lane hard, a cheaper item that keeps you alive may come first.

When is Magic Stick the better choice?

Magic Stick gains a charge each time a visible enemy nearby uses an ability. When you activate it, it gives back health and mana based on the charges stored. It later builds into Magic Wand, which holds more charges.

This is strong against mid heroes who cast spells often. Each spell they throw at you fills your stick. When they go for a kill, you burst back some health and mana at once.

Against a hero who mostly right-clicks, the stick fills slowly. In that lane, another item may give more value.

Should Pudge mid buy a Bracer first?

Bracer gives Strength, a little of the other attributes and some bonus health. For a Strength hero like Pudge, that means more health and better hits.

A Bracer is a sensible pick when the enemy mid harasses you with attacks. The extra health lets you stay near the wave and keep taking last hits. It is cheap, so it does not delay your bigger items much.

The trade-off is that it does nothing special. It will not refill your mana, store runes or charge from spells. It just makes you a little sturdier.

Do boots or Wind Lace come first for a roaming Pudge?

Movement speed helps a mid Pudge reach side lanes faster and walk into hook range. Boots of Speed are the usual base for later boots. Wind Lace is a cheap piece that adds a small amount of speed.

Speed early is a choice for a Pudge who plans to leave mid often. If you plan to stay in lane until you have your ultimate, sustain usually matters more.

Phase Boots are a common upgrade for melee heroes. Their active gives a short burst of speed and lets you walk through units. That helps you get around creeps to line up a hook. Check the Pudge build page for the current core items.

How do you choose for your lane?

Ask what will make you lose the lane. Then buy the item that fixes it.

  • The enemy casts spells at you often. Consider Magic Stick.
  • The enemy hits you with ranged attacks. Consider Bracer, plus regeneration.
  • You want rune control and many ganks. Consider Bottle.
  • You plan to leave lane early. Consider boots or Wind Lace.

It also helps to check the matchup itself. The Pudge matchup pages show how Pudge does against each opponent, which tells you how hard the lane is likely to be.

What mistakes should you avoid with your first item?

Do not copy a build without looking at the enemy. A first item that suits one lane can waste gold in another.

Do not delay your first item for too long by holding gold. Small items help most in the first minutes, when every bit of health and mana counts.

Finally, do not forget consumables. A few healing items can matter more than any small item if the lane is rough. For a broader view, see the items against magic guide.
