Common Pudge Mistakes
Updated: (today) · 3 min read · Facts checked Oct 4, 2026 on patch 7.41
The most common Pudge mistakes are throwing hooks with no plan, showing yourself before the hook, leaving
Rot on too long and dying before your ultimate matters. Most of them come from playing for the highlight instead of the game. Fixing even a few of them makes your Pudge much harder to play against.
ADVICE
Throwing hooks just because they are ready
Meat Hook is fun to throw, so many players throw it on cooldown. A blind hook into a crowd usually hits a creep or nothing. Each miss costs mana and tells the enemy where you stand.
Before you throw, ask what happens if it lands. If nobody can follow up and you cannot finish the kill, a successful hook may still get you nothing. Wait for a target who is out of position and close enough to your team.
Hooking an enemy into a fight you lose
A hook moves the enemy to you, but it also puts you next to them. Pulling a healthy carry into your support line can get your supports killed. Look at who you are pulling, not just whether you can reach them.
Check the map for nearby enemy heroes too. If their team is just out of sight, your hook can start a fight on their terms. Missing enemies on the minimap are a reason to wait.
Standing in plain sight before the hook
Enemies dodge hooks they can see coming. If you stand in the open with a clear line to them, they will simply move or hide behind creeps. Fog of war hides you, and that is where most good hooks start.
Use trees, high ground and the edge of vision. Step out only when you are ready to throw. Our guide on hooking from the fog covers how to use hidden angles.
Leaving Rot on for too long
Rot hurts and slows nearby enemies, but it damages Pudge as well. A common mistake is forgetting to turn it off after a fight or while walking. That health loss adds up and can turn an easy escape into a death.
Rot also does not pierce spell immunity. Against an enemy with Black King Bar active, it will not hurt them, but it still hurts you. Turn it off in that case. Our guide on when to toggle Rot has more on timing.
Casting Dismember on the wrong target
Dismember holds one enemy for the whole channel. Picking the wrong target can waste it. A tank with high health and lots of saves is often a poor choice when a fragile hero stands nearby.
Remember that a stun or silence on you breaks the channel. Casting Dismember right in front of an enemy who still has a disable often ends early. Wait for that disable to be used, or let your team catch that hero first.
On the plus side, Dismember pierces spell immunity and can only be removed by strong dispels. Do not avoid a good target just because they have Black King Bar active.
Forgetting the defensive tools
Meat Shield is a defensive self-cast that cannot be dispelled. Many Pudge players forget it until it is too late. Use it before you take a big burst of damage, not after you are already low.
Hooking your own teammates is another tool players forget. A hook on an ally pulls them to you, which can save a caught carry. See saving allies with your hook for when this works.
Ignoring the rest of the game
Some players spend the whole game looking for hooks. They skip last hits, never ward and never join their team's objectives. A Pudge with no gold and no vision struggles to land anything.
Spend quiet moments farming, placing wards or pushing a lane. Buy items that fit the game, not a fixed list. The Pudge items page shows what players buy at each stage. Before you plan a combo, check the current values on Pudge abilities.
