Pudge Hooks Around Rune Spots

Rune spots are some of the most reliable places to land a Meat Hook. Enemies know where runes appear, so they walk there on purpose and on time. That makes their path easy to guess. Pudge can wait nearby, contest the rune and punish the hero who comes to take it.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

Rune spawn times change with patches, so we do not list them here. The Pudge early game guide covers how runes fit into your first minutes.

Why do enemies walk to rune spots?

Runes give real value. Some give gold, some give a strong short buff, and they can help a mid hero refill a Bottle. Every team wants them, so heroes move to rune spots at the expected moment.

That is the key for Pudge. A hero walking to a rune is not moving at random. They are heading to a known place. If you know where they are going, you know where to throw.

Mid heroes are the most common visitors. Supports often come too, either to take a rune themselves or to help their mid. Watch which enemies show up and when.

Where should you stand near a rune?

There is no single best spot, and it depends on vision. Use these ideas to choose your own:

  • Stay out of sight. Trees and high ground block vision. A spot in the trees beside the river path keeps you hidden from enemies on low ground.
  • Cover the path, not the rune. Hooks land best on the walk in. A hero standing still on the rune may already be watching for you.
  • Keep the line clear. Make sure creeps or allies will not block your throw.
  • Have an exit. If the hook misses, you need a safe way back.

Remember that the hook flies through trees and cliffs. Only units stop it. So you can hide behind trees and still have an open line to the rune path. The tree hooks guide explains how to use that cover.

Check enemy vision first. A ward near the rune turns your hiding spot into open ground. If an enemy walks around your area, they may have seen you.

How do you contest runes in lane?

In the mid lane, runes are part of the fight between the two mid heroes. Pudge has a strong tool here: the threat of a hook. An enemy mid who knows Pudge can reach the rune must think twice before walking over.

A few practical ideas:

  • Move early. Get to the rune area a bit before the enemy so you pick the angle.
  • Push the threat, not just the throw. Standing near the rune can scare the enemy away even if you never hook.
  • Watch the lane too. Leaving lane for a rune costs creeps. Make sure the trade is worth it.
  • Call your support. A support who joins you makes the rune area much more dangerous for the enemy.

The mid lane tips cover the wider lane battle, including when to stay and when to rotate.

What if the enemy takes the rune first?

Sometimes they get there first. That is not always a loss. A hero who just took a rune is often heading straight back to lane or out to gank. Their next path is easy to guess too.

If they took a strong buff, be careful. Some runes make a hero much stronger for a short time. Do not walk into a fight you cannot win. Wait it out, or let them come to you near your tower.

If they took a gold rune and are walking back, a hook on the way out can still land. Aim ahead along their path back to lane.

FAQ

Can Pudge hook a hero standing on the rune spot?

Yes, as long as no unit blocks the line. A hero standing still is even easier to hit, though they may be watching for you.

Should Pudge leave lane for every rune?

No. Leaving lane costs creeps and experience. Go when the rune is worth it, when you have a good angle, or when your support can help.

When do runes spawn?

Spawn times change with patches. Check the current patch notes or the early game guide rather than relying on old numbers.

Is the rune spot a good place for fake hooks?

It can be. A hero walking to a rune is already nervous about Pudge, so a fake hook may push them into a predictable dodge.

  • Hide near the path to the rune, not right on top of it.
  • Check for enemy wards before you commit to a spot.
  • Arrive early so you choose the angle.
  • Call your support to make the rune area more dangerous.
  • Weigh the creeps you lose against the rune you contest.
