Can Pudge Hook Through Trees?

Yes, Pudge can hook through trees. Meat Hook flies straight through trees and over cliffs, and only a unit on the line can stop it. Trees still matter, though, because they block vision. That makes a tree line the best place for Pudge to hide, wait and throw.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

This guide is about using trees well. For the full list of what the hook grabs or ignores, see the hook interactions guide.

Does Meat Hook really go through trees?

It does. The hook does not care about terrain. A thick wall of trees between you and the target changes nothing about the flight. If a hero stands on the far side and no creep or other unit is in the way, the hook reaches them.

Many new players wait for a gap in the trees before they throw. The question to ask is never "is there a tree in the way?" It is "is there a unit in the way?" Look for creeps, allies and other heroes on the line, and ignore the trees.

The same is true for cliffs. The hook flies over a cliff edge as if it were flat ground.

Why are trees such good cover for Pudge?

Trees block vision. An enemy in the lane cannot see past a tree line unless their team has a ward or another source of sight there. A Pudge standing inside the trees is in fog for them.

This gives you two edges at once. The enemy does not know you are there, so they walk without care. And the hook can still pass through the same trees that hide you. You get the hiding spot and the open line in one place.

The other side of this matters too. Trees block your vision as well. If a tree line stands between you and the lane, you may not see the target either. Your team's vision, the minimap and good guesses fill that gap. Hooking a target you cannot see is its own skill, covered in the fog hooks guide.

How do you pick your own hiding spot in the trees?

There is no single best tree. The right spot depends on the lane, the creep wave and where the enemy has vision.

  • Stay close to the path. Pick trees near where enemies actually walk.
  • Go deep enough. Standing right at the edge of a tree line can leave you in sight. A step or two deeper is often safer.
  • Keep the line clear of creeps. A great hiding spot behind your own wave is useless. Choose an angle where creeps do not sit between you and the target.
  • Have a way out. If the hook misses, you are revealed. Pick a spot with a path back to safety, not a dead end next to the enemy tower.
  • Change spots. Using the same trees every time teaches the enemy where to look. Rotate between a few places.

Watch how enemies react. If a hero suddenly stops walking near your trees, or backs away, they may have vision on you. Move instead of waiting.

What can ruin a tree line ambush?

Trees can be removed. Many players eat trees with Tango or cut them with items, and a gap in the trees can open sight onto your spot. If you see trees vanish near you, assume the enemy is checking.

Wards are the other big threat. An Observer Ward near the trees turns your fog into open ground. The Pudge wards guide explains how to read enemy vision and when to clear it.

Your own actions can also reveal you. Attacking a creep, casting a spell or walking out to check the lane shows where you are. Once you are inside the trees, stay still and wait for your moment.

How do you throw a good hook from the trees?

Patience is the main tool. Wait until the target is close, walking in a straight line and not watching the trees.

Throw at where the target will be, not where they stand now. The hook needs time to travel, and the target keeps moving during that time. The hook prediction guide goes deeper on reading movement.

Finally, think about what happens after the pull. Dragging a hero into your trees is great if you can finish them. Check the current damage and range on the abilities page so you know what one hook can do at your level.

FAQ

Can trees block Pudge's hook?

No. Meat Hook passes through trees and over cliffs. Only units, such as creeps, heroes and allies, stop it.

Can enemies see Pudge hiding in the trees?

Not by default, because trees block vision. They can see you if they have a ward nearby, a unit that sees over trees, or if you stand at the edge of the tree line.

Is it worth waiting in the trees for a long time?

Only if the enemy is likely to walk past. If no target comes, you lose farm and your team loses a hero. Set a limit, then move on or join a fight.

Can I hook a hero who is also inside the trees?

Yes, if no unit blocks the line. The trees do not stop the hook, so a hero hiding in the trees is not safe from it.

Checklist

  • Ignore trees when you check your line; look for units instead.
  • Hide deep enough in the trees to stay out of sight.
  • Pick spots close to enemy paths with a clear line past the creeps.
  • Plan a safe way out before you throw.
  • Move if trees vanish nearby or enemies start avoiding your spot.
  • Rotate between hiding spots so enemies cannot learn your habits.
