Hooking Supports at Ward Spots

Enemy supports spend a lot of time placing and removing wards. While they do it, they often walk to quiet spots near cliffs and trees, stop, and look at the ground. That makes them good targets for a patient Pudge. This guide covers how to read when a support is about to ward, where to wait and how to throw. For Pudge's own warding, see the vision guide.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

Why are warding supports easy to hook?

To place a ward, a support walks to the spot and uses the item right there. For a short moment they stand in a place you could guess. A hook that arrives then is very hard to dodge.

Supports also tend to ward alone. They walk away from their team to reach a good spot, often at the edge of the map's busy areas. If you catch them there, help is far away.

Removing enemy wards takes time too. A support who is looking for a ward usually walks slowly, stops often and focuses on the ground. Their attention is on the hunt, not on you.

Where do supports usually ward?

Ward spots change from game to game, and the layout changes between map updates. Still, most good ward spots have a few things in common:

  • High ground with a view over a lane, the river or a jungle path.
  • Edges of cliffs and tree lines that give a wide view.
  • Places near runes, Roshan or busy jungle entrances.
  • Spots close to where a fight is likely to happen soon.

Watch where your own team places wards, too. If a spot is good for your vision, it is likely good for theirs. Enemy supports often check those same places to remove your wards.

How do you see a support coming to ward?

Information is the key. Look at the minimap and your own wards. A support leaving lane alone and heading toward high ground is a clear sign.

Timing helps as well. Supports often refresh wards after an old one runs out or gets removed. They also ward before an objective, such as a push or a Roshan attempt. If you know a fight is coming, the enemy support will likely move to ward first.

When you see them coming, move to a spot near where they are likely to stop. Do not chase. A chasing Pudge is easy to spot and easy to run from. A waiting Pudge in fog is not.

How should you wait for the support?

Hide in trees or on unseen high ground near the likely ward spot. Meat Hook flies through trees and cliffs, so you can stand behind cover and still throw. The fog hook guide covers hiding spots in more detail.

Be patient. Let the support walk all the way to their spot. If you throw while they are still walking toward you, the angle is fine, but they can react. If you wait until they stop to place the ward, they are still for a moment, and that is your best window.

Check that nothing stands on the line. Creeps or summoned units near the support will catch the hook first. If the line is not clean, wait for the support to step clear or move to a new angle.

What should you do after the hook lands?

A lone support pulled to Pudge is usually a fast kill. Turn on Rot and use Dismember to finish. Supports often carry escape items, so act quickly.

Then think about the ward. If they had just placed it, your team may want to clear it. If they had not placed it yet, you have stopped that vision from going up at all. Either way, the enemy loses map control for a while.

Remember that the enemy team may come to help. If a fight was about to start, you may have just thinned their side. If not, take the kill and get back to safety.

FAQ

Is hooking warding supports worth the time?

Often, yes. Catching a lone support kills a hero and denies their vision. It is a good use of time when you are already near a likely ward spot.

When is the best moment to hook a warding support?

When they stop to place the ward. Heroes stop briefly while casting, so they are still for a short moment.

Can I hook supports through trees near a ward spot?

Yes. The hook flies through trees and cliffs. Only units such as heroes and creeps stop it.
