Pudge plays very differently in low and high MMR games. In lower brackets, hooks land more often because fewer enemies ward, watch the minimap or dodge. In higher brackets, enemies punish every mistake and hide behind creeps. The hero is the same, but what you need to practice changes as you climb.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

We do not quote win rates in this guide. You can see how Pudge does in each rank on the Pudge stats page, which uses real match data.

What changes between Herald and Immortal?

The biggest change is how much the enemy knows. At low ranks, many players do not track where Pudge is. They walk in open lanes and do not think about the hook until it hits them.

As ranks go up, players watch the map more. They notice when Pudge leaves the lane. They place wards in the places he likes to hide. They stand behind creeps on purpose.

At the top, players also punish you. A missed hook may mean the enemy walks up and hits you, or calls their team to come for you. The cost of each mistake gets higher.

How should you play Pudge in low MMR?

In lower brackets, the hook is your best weapon. Many enemies walk in straight lines and do not dodge. Use that, but do not rely on luck.

Focus on a few basics. Learn to last hit while you wait for a chance to hook. Learn when to leave lane to gank. Learn to toggle Rot off when you do not need it, so you do not waste health.

Watch out for chasing too far. Low rank games often turn into long chases where one kill costs the whole team. Get the kill if it is there, then go back to farming or pushing.

A strong habit to build early is looking at the minimap. If you know where the enemies are, you can choose safe fights and good hooks. The beginner guide covers the first things to learn.

How should you play Pudge in mid MMR?

In the middle ranks, enemies start to ward and watch for you. Hooks from the same tree every game stop working. You have to change where you stand and when you show up.

This is a good time to work on timing. Rotate when the enemy is busy, such as when they walk to a rune or push a lane. Use Smoke of Deceit with your team to reach a lane unseen.

It also helps to plan with your team. A Pudge who hooks a target that no teammate can follow up on may get a kill, or may just get himself killed. Tell your team when you are about to move.

How should you play Pudge in high MMR?

In high brackets, enemies dodge, ward and punish. You will land fewer hooks. That means each hook needs a good reason.

Think about the threat of the hook, not just the hook itself. An enemy who fears it will stand back and lose farm. You can win lanes without landing much, just by being a danger.

Map awareness matters even more. Skilled players will notice where you are and ward against you. They will also bait you into bad hooks. Watch for an enemy who seems too easy to catch. There may be a teammate waiting in fog.

At this level, your team also expects you to do more than hook. Use Dismember to catch key targets in fights. Use your bulk to soak damage and protect your carry. The teamfight guide covers that role.

What should you focus on to climb with Pudge?

Pick one skill at a time. If you miss many hooks, work on aim and timing. If you die often, work on map awareness and safe spots. If you get kills but lose games, think about what you do after the kill.

Watch your own replays. Look at the hooks you missed and ask why. Was there a creep in the way? Did the enemy see you coming? Did you throw from too far? Small fixes add up as you climb.
