Pudge vs Pudge: Playing the Mirror
Updated: (today) · 4 min read · Facts checked Oct 6, 2026 on patch 7.41
In a Pudge mirror, both players have the same tools. Each has a hook, Rot, a shield and a strong ultimate. The player who wins is usually the one who shows less and waits longer. Since both of you know how the hook works, surprise and patience matter even more than usual.
ADVICE
How is a Pudge mirror different from other lanes?
Most enemies have to learn how to dodge Pudge. Another Pudge player already knows. He knows the hook flies in a straight line and grabs the first unit in its path. He knows you like to stand in trees and fog. So the usual tricks work less well.
The mirror is also even on paper. Neither hero has a natural edge in tools. That means the fight is decided by small things: who has more health, who has more mana, who has their ultimate first, and who wastes a spell.
You can see real numbers for this pairing, when there is enough data, on the Pudge matchup pages.
Who wins when two Pudges trade hits?
Both heroes are melee, so neither can poke from range. Trades happen when one Pudge walks up for a last hit and the other punishes him. Fights also start when one Pudge lands a hook.
Rot hurts both sides. It deals Magical damage around you and slows enemies, but it also costs your own health. If both Pudges turn on Rot next to each other, both lose health. The one who started with more health, or who turns Rot off at the right time, often comes out ahead.
Meat Shield blocks damage for a short time. Use it when the enemy commits, not before. If you use it too early, he can wait it out and fight you after it ends.
Before you trade, look at the enemy's health and mana. If he has just used his hook, you have a safe window. If his hook is ready, stay behind your creeps.
How do you hook another Pudge?
Meat Hook catches the first unit it touches. Your creeps are your best shield, and his creeps are his. Wait for him to step out from behind his wave.
The enemy Pudge also wants to hook you. When he walks forward to aim, he may leave the safety of his creeps. That is often the best moment to throw. A hook he does not see coming is far more likely to land than one he is watching for.
Fog of war still helps. If you can hide where he has no vision, he cannot tell where your hook will come from. Do not stand in the same spot each time. He will learn your habits fast, because he uses the same ones.
If you miss, back off at once. You now have no hook, and he may still have his. That gap is when a mirror is lost.
What happens with Black King Bar on both sides?
Black King Bar changes the mirror in a few ways. Against a Pudge with BKB active, your hook still pulls him, but the damage is blocked. Rot deals Magical damage, so it does not hurt him through BKB.
Dismember pierces spell immunity. That means both Pudges can still use their ultimate on each other through BKB. A Pudge who buys BKB is protected from many things, but not from the enemy Pudge's Dismember.
Dismember can be broken. A stun, hex, silence, cyclone or sleep on the caster stops the channel. The guide on stopping Dismember covers this side of it. If your team has one of these, save it for the moment the enemy Pudge starts his ultimate on an ally.
How should you play the mirror in teamfights?
In a fight, both Pudges want to catch a key target. Watch where the enemy Pudge is before you go in. If he is hidden and his hook is ready, your carry is in danger.
You can protect your team by standing between him and your carry. His hook catches the first unit it meets, so a body in the way blocks it. Do not do this if it leaves you with no way out.
Flesh Heap gives Pudge permanent Strength as enemy heroes die near him. The Pudge who wins more fights grows stronger over time. Early kills in the mirror can have a lasting effect.
FAQ
Can Pudge Dismember another Pudge with BKB?
Yes. Dismember pierces spell immunity, so it works on a Pudge with Black King Bar active.
Does Rot hurt an enemy Pudge?
Yes, unless he is spell immune. Rot also damages you, so watch your own health in a close fight.
What is the safest way to start a Pudge mirror lane?
Stay behind your creeps and focus on last hits. Wait for the enemy Pudge to waste his hook before you take risks.
