Pudge can be a strong pick in one versus one mid games, because a single landed hook can decide a short duel. The mode rewards hero kills and tower damage, and Pudge has a clear kill threat. But he is melee, and a careful ranged opponent can wear him down before he gets close.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

How does the Solo Mid mode work?

Dota has a built-in mode for one versus one mid games. Two players face each other in the middle lane. Only the mid lane spawns creeps, and the side towers cannot be damaged.

The rules for winning are simple. The first player to get two kills, or to destroy the enemy tower, wins. Both players may pick the same hero, so a Pudge mirror is possible. You do not see the enemy pick until you have chosen.

Many players also set up custom duels with their own rules. A common one is "first blood wins." Agree on the rules before the game starts, so nobody argues later. The tips below work for both.

Why is Pudge good in one versus one?

The mode is short and every kill counts a lot. Pudge has one of the clearest kill threats in the game. A hook that lands pulls the enemy away from the safety of his creeps and next to you.

Meat Hook deals Pure damage and drags the target to you. Then Rot keeps hurting and slowing him while he tries to walk away. Once you have your ultimate, Dismember holds him in place. For short duels, that is a lot of damage in one go.

The threat alone also helps. A player who fears the hook stands farther back and misses last hits. That gives you a lead in gold and levels without even landing a hook.

What makes Pudge weak in this mode?

Pudge is melee. A ranged hero can hit him each time he walks up for a creep. Over time, that harass adds up, and he has to retreat or risk a kill.

The enemy only has one target to watch: you. There are no other lanes to distract him. That makes hooks from fog harder, because he knows exactly who to look for.

The hook also catches the first unit it meets. If the enemy stays behind his creep wave, your hook will often hit a creep instead. A miss leaves you with no main spell for a while, and a skilled player will step up and attack you right then.

How should you use runes in a duel?

Runes appear in the river near the mid lane. A good rune can tip a short duel, so both players often fight over them.

Walking to a rune also means walking a path the enemy can guess. If he goes for a rune, he may leave his creeps and walk in the open. That is a good chance for a hook. The rune hooks guide covers this in more depth.

Do not chase a rune if the enemy is closer and ready. Losing a rune is better than losing a kill, because two kills end the game.

How do you win the duel as Pudge?

Start by playing safe. Take last hits you can reach without getting hit. Stay on the side of the lane where the enemy has the hardest time aiming at you.

Look for moments when the enemy walks out from behind his creeps. Good times are when he steps up to last hit, walks to a rune, or turns to retreat. Throw only when the path is clear.

Watch your health. Rot damages you too, so do not leave it on when nobody is near. In a short duel, one bad trade can give the enemy a kill. Check the current values on the abilities page so you know what each spell does at your level.

If the tower is the easier target, push it. A kill is not the only way to win in the built-in mode.

FAQ

What are the win rules of the Solo Mid mode?

The first player to reach two kills or destroy an enemy tower wins. Custom duels can use other rules, so agree on them first.

Is Pudge good against ranged heroes in a duel?

It is harder. A ranged hero can harass Pudge from a distance. He needs a clean hook to turn the lane around.

Can both players pick Pudge?

Yes. The mode allows both players to pick the same hero. See the Pudge mirror guide for how to play it.
