Pudge Hook or Wait: How to Decide
Updated: (today) · 4 min read · Facts checked Oct 5, 2026 on patch 7.41
Every Pudge faces the same choice many times a game: throw the hook now, or wait for something better? There is no perfect answer, but there is a simple way to think about it. Weigh what you gain if the hook lands against what you lose if it misses, and decide fast.
ADVICE
Why is the hook-or-wait choice so hard?
You have very little time. A target is in range now, but in a moment they may walk away, turn, or hide behind creeps. Thinking too long means the chance slips by.
The stakes also feel high.
Meat Hook is your main spell. If it misses, you lose your threat for a while and show the enemy where you are. If it lands, it can turn into a kill or a won fight.
Most players fall into one of two habits. Some throw too fast and miss a lot. Others wait too long and miss chances. A simple process helps you find the middle.
What should you check before you throw?
Run through four quick questions. With practice, this takes almost no time.
- Target value. Is this hero worth the hook? A carry or a support with a key spell is often worth more than a tanky hero who will just walk out.
- Escape. Does the target have a way to get away after the pull? If they can blink or jump back, the hook may not lead to a kill.
- Follow-up. Can you or your team finish the job? Think about your own damage and whether allies are close.
- Cooldown cost. What happens while the hook is down? If the enemy can punish you, the miss costs more.
If most answers point toward "yes", throw. If most point toward "no", wait or look for a different play. Check cooldowns and damage on the abilities page so you know what you are risking.
When should you throw the hook right away?
Some moments are clear. Throw when the target is walking in a straight line and cannot see you. Throw when they just used their escape. Throw when an ally is right behind you and ready to join.
Also throw when waiting has its own cost. If the target is about to reach their tower or their team, the chance will not come back soon. A fair shot now can be better than a perfect shot that never comes.
In lane, throwing at fair chances also builds pressure. Even a miss tells the enemy you are willing to throw. The hook confidence guide covers why holding too long is a common mistake.
When is waiting the better choice?
Wait when the hook would likely hit a creep first. Wait when the target has a clear escape ready. Wait when throwing would reveal you before a bigger play, such as a smoke gank.
In teamfights, waiting is often smart. The first target in range is not always the best one. Hooking a tanky frontliner may do little, while waiting a moment may give you a shot at a key hero. The teamfight guide has more on target choice.
Waiting is also right when your team is not ready. A hook with no follow-up may pull an enemy into you alone, and you may lose that fight.
How do you make faster decisions over time?
Speed comes from repeating the process. At first, you will think through each question. After many games, the answers come by feel.
Review your games now and then. Look at hooks you held and hooks you threw. Ask whether each choice made sense. You will start to see patterns, such as always waiting too long in lane, or throwing too early in fights.
Do not chase perfection. Some good choices will miss, and some bad choices will land. Judge the decision, not just the result.
FAQ
Is it better to throw more hooks or fewer?
Throw when the gain is worth the risk. A Pudge who only throws perfect shots throws too few. A Pudge who throws at everything wastes cooldowns.
Should I wait for my team before every hook?
Not always. In lane, you can often finish the play with your own spells. In bigger fights, having allies ready makes the hook much more valuable.
What if I hesitate and the target walks away?
That happens. Treat it as a lesson. Next time, decide faster when the same kind of chance comes up.
