How to Play Pudge When Your Team Is Losing
Updated: (today) · 4 min read · Facts checked Oct 5, 2026 on patch 7.41
When your team is behind, Pudge can still swing the game. One good hook can catch a hero who walked too far, save an ally, or stop a push at your base. The key is to pick your moments and stop chasing the plays that only work when you are ahead.
ADVICE
How should Pudge play when the team is losing?
Your role shifts from hunter to defender. Early in the game, you may have roamed the map looking for kills. When the enemy is stronger, roaming alone often ends with you dead and the enemy pushing a tower.
Stay closer to your team. Play near your own towers, where the enemy has to walk into your vision to reach you. Each enemy who steps into hook range near your base is a target, and your allies are close enough to follow up.
You also become a key piece of your team's defense. A strong enemy carry still has to walk up to your towers. A well-timed hook can pull that carry into your whole team. That threat alone can slow the enemy down.
Which fights should you take when behind?
Not every fight is worth it. When the enemy has more gold and items, a fair fight in the open usually goes their way. Look for fights where you have an edge.
Good fights when behind often have one or more of these traits:
- The enemy is split up and one hero is alone.
- The fight is near your towers or high ground.
- An enemy is caught out of position after a push.
- Your team has key spells ready and theirs are on cooldown.
Bad fights are the ones you take because you feel you must do something. Walking into five enemies to force a hook is rarely worth it. Wait for a better chance.
How do you defend high ground with hooks?
High ground blocks vision from below, so enemies pushing up a ramp often cannot see you. This gives Pudge a strong spot for hooks. Stand where you can see the ramp but the enemy cannot see you.
When an enemy steps forward, pull them up into your team. The pulled hero is now cut off from their allies and surrounded by yours. Even a strong carry can fall in that spot.
Be patient. The enemy wants you to waste your hook on a creep or a tanky hero. Save it for a key target, such as a carry who walks up too far or a support who sets wards. The high ground hooks guide covers the angles in more detail.
How can Pudge save allies in a losing game?
Meat Hook can pull an ally as well as an enemy. Allies are pulled without damage. When a teammate is caught and about to die, a hook can drag them out of danger.
This is one of the most useful things Pudge can do when behind. Saving your carry from a gank keeps them alive to farm and grow. A single save can be worth more than a kill.
Watch your allies during fights. If one is cut off and has no way out, a quick hook may bring them back. The hook allies guide explains how to aim these saves.
How do you stay useful without a lot of gold?
Pudge does not need many items to be a threat. His spells keep their value even when you are behind on farm. The hook still pulls and
Dismember still disables a target for its full channel.
Focus on things that do not need gold. Place wards if your team lacks them. Be in the right place for fights. Stand where your hook threatens the enemy's path. These small things help the team more than chasing kills you cannot finish.
Also think about how you feel. A losing game can make you want to give up or blame others. Neither helps. Stay calm and look for the one good play. The tilt guide has tips on staying steady when things go wrong.
FAQ
Can Pudge carry a game from behind?
Pudge rarely wins a game alone, but he can turn fights with one good hook. Catches near your base and saved allies are often what let a team come back.
Should I keep roaming when my team is losing?
Usually less. Roaming alone into enemy territory is risky when they are stronger. Stay near your team and your towers, and pick off heroes who come to you.
What should Pudge buy when behind?
It depends on what is killing your team. Defensive items that keep you alive in fights are often better than damage. See the items page for current data.
