Meat Hook does not leave the moment you press the key. Pudge first plays a short cast animation, and only when it ends does the hook fly. That brief pause is the cast time. It gives the enemy a small window to react, and much of good hooking is about hiding or using that window.

ADVICE

This guide is gameplay advice, not statistics. Current ability values are on Pudge abilities; match results are on Pudge matchups.

The exact cast time is a game value. Check it on the Pudge abilities page. This guide covers how it affects your play.

What is the cast time on Meat Hook?

Every spell in the game has a moment between the order and the effect. For the hook, Pudge winds up his arm, then throws. During the wind up, nothing has flown yet.

Two things are true during this moment:

  • You can still cancel. If you press Stop before the hook leaves, the cast is canceled. It costs no mana and the spell does not go on cooldown.
  • The enemy can see it. A Pudge winding up toward a hero is a visible warning.

Once the animation ends, the hook is on its way. From then on, the mana and cooldown are spent, hit or miss.

Why does the cast time give enemies a chance to react?

Your total hook delay has three parts: any turn Pudge needs, the cast time, and the flight. The enemy can react at any point in that chain. The cast time is the first moment they see something clearly happen.

An alert player watches Pudge. When they see the wind up start, they may step sideways right away. If they move before the hook even leaves, your aim is already off.

This is why the same hook that lands on a careless hero misses a careful one. The careful hero used the cast time to move. The careless one did not notice it.

How do you hide the cast time?

If the enemy cannot see the wind up, they cannot react to it. You want them to notice the hook only when it is already flying. Here are the main ways:

  • Cast from fog. If you stand where the enemy has no vision, they cannot see your animation. Trees and high ground give that cover. See the fog hooks guide.
  • Cast behind creeps. A crowd of units around Pudge makes the wind up harder to notice. Just make sure none of them are on your line.
  • Cast when they are busy. A hero going for a last hit or fighting someone else is not watching you.
  • Pre-face your throw. If Pudge already faces the target, there is no telling turn before the wind up. The turn rate guide explains why.

None of these change the cast time itself. They change what the enemy sees during it.

How do you combine cast time with fake hooks?

Because canceling during the wind up is free, you can start a hook on purpose and stop it. The enemy sees the animation and dodges. You cancel, wait, and throw the real hook where they dodged to.

This works best on players who react to the wind up. A careless player may not dodge at all, so a fake does nothing. A careful player is exactly who a fake catches. The fake hook guide covers the timing and patterns.

Do not overuse it. If you fake every time, enemies learn to wait. Mix real hooks and fakes so they never know which is coming.

What can go wrong during the cast time?

The wind up is a moment of risk for Pudge, too. A stun or other disable on Pudge during the animation stops the cast. The hook does not fly. Enemies who know this may try to disable you when they see you turn toward them.

You also commit to an aim point. If the target changes direction during the wind up, you cannot adjust it. Your choices are to let it fly or cancel. If you see the target turn sharply, canceling may be the better call.

FAQ

Can I cancel Meat Hook after pressing the key?

Yes, during the cast animation. Press Stop before the hook leaves. It costs no mana and does not use the cooldown.

Does quick cast remove the cast time?

No. Quick cast removes the extra click to confirm your target. The cast animation still plays before the hook flies.

Why do enemies dodge before my hook even leaves?

They see the wind up and move early. Hide the animation in fog or behind creeps, or use a fake to bait the dodge.

Checklist

  • Treat the cast time as part of the hook's total delay.
  • Throw from fog or when the enemy is busy so they miss the wind up.
  • Keep your line clear when you cast behind creeps.
  • Cancel with Stop if the target turns sharply during the wind up.
  • Mix fakes and real hooks so enemies cannot read the animation.
  • Check the current cast time on the abilities page.
