Is Support Pudge Bad?
Updated: (today) · 4 min read · Facts checked Oct 6, 2026 on patch 7.41
Support Pudge is not bad by itself. He can be a strong support when the player does the support work. The bad reputation comes from players who pick him to hunt kills and forget the lane. They leave their carry alone, skip wards and wander off to throw hooks. When that happens, the team loses a support and gains a roaming hero with no plan. Play the role first and the hook second, and the complaints go away.
ADVICE
For the basic support routine, read the support tips guide. This page is about why teammates worry and how to earn their trust.
Why do teammates dislike support Pudge?
They have usually seen it go wrong. Common stories from the carry's side:
- The lane gets empty. Pudge leaves for a gank, and the carry is left against two enemy heroes.
- The hooks miss. Each missed hook costs mana and gives the enemy free harass.
- No vision. The support role buys most wards. A Pudge who skips them leaves the map dark.
- Kills over saves. Pudge chases an enemy across the map while his carry dies in lane.
None of these are about the hero. They are about the habits. But Pudge attracts these habits, because the hook is so tempting.
Is Pudge weaker than other supports?
He trades some things for others. Pudge is a melee hero, so ranged supports can harass him in lane. He has no heal for allies and no quick stun. A hook needs a clear line, so it can fail in a busy lane.
He also brings things few supports have. A hook can pull an enemy into your lane, or pull your own carry out of danger. Dismember holds one enemy still and goes through spell immunity. And his threat alone can keep enemies back.
Whether that trade is good depends on the game. The when to pick Pudge guide helps you judge the draft. For his real results, see the Pudge hero page.
How do you play support Pudge so it helps the team?
Think of every choice in terms of your carry. A few habits change how the team sees you:
- Stay in lane early. Leave only when the lane is stable and you have told your carry.
- Buy the wards. If you are the support, the team counts on your vision.
- Hook with follow-up. Throw when your carry can join, not just when the line looks open.
- Save before you hunt. A hook that pulls your carry out of a gank is worth as much as a kill.
- Come back after a rotation. A gank that works still costs your lane if you vanish for too long.
The rotation timing guide covers when leaving lane pays off.
How do you handle teammates who doubt you?
You will meet players who groan when you pick Pudge as a support. That is normal. The best reply is play, not words.
Start with a short, calm line in team chat. Something like "I will stay in lane and ward" tells your carry you know the job. Then keep that promise. Most doubts fade after a few minutes of good support play.
If a teammate keeps flaming, mute them. Arguing in chat drains your focus and wins nothing. All chat flame is reportable, and it tilts you as much as the person you aim it at.
What should you do after a bad start?
Bad starts happen. Maybe you missed a few hooks and your carry is behind. Do not try to fix it with more wild hooks. Go back to the basics. Place wards, help your carry farm safely and wait for clean chances.
A support Pudge who keeps the map lit and saves his carry is still useful, even with no kills. Your team may not praise you for it, but it helps you win.
FAQ
Is support Pudge bad?
No, but it is easy to play badly. When the player does the support jobs first, Pudge can be a useful support.
Why does my carry hate when I pick Pudge?
Many carries have had a support Pudge leave them alone in lane. Show them early that you will stay and help.
Should support Pudge buy wards?
If you are the support, yes. Vision is part of the role, and it also gives you safer hook spots.
Is support Pudge good in low ranks?
It can be, since many players in those games walk in clear lines. It still only works if you keep doing the support jobs.
